Set 1:
Gosse van Dijk en Carmela Michaili
Inspired by the vast beauty of nature; the magma running through the earth’s veins and the silent, small actions that define the purest forms of poetry, like alisàchne. Alisàchne (αλισάχνη) is a Greek word that describes the salt trapped in the air when a wave hits the rocks. The duo explores exactly this, giving sound — any sound — the intention and importance to persist and extend in space, like salt trapped in mist or magma flowing beneath the earth.
Working with improvisation on piano, flute, voice and objects, surrounded by an environment of sculptures and images in space.
Set 2:
Tobias Klein solo bass clarinet
Tobias Klein’s solo bass clarinet playing is rooted in the close connection between composition and improvisation in his work. When composing for the instrument, he draws extensively on his experience as an improviser. In his solo playing, the direction is reversed: ideas and material from his written work become the starting point for improvised music.
The music starts from the relationship between player and instrument at the smallest scale: grain, texture, the behaviour of a single tone. Melody, rhythm and harmony grow out of these details. Chosen for their ambiguous sound, multiphonics act as structural elements and link the music to the physics of acoustics and to the natural world.
The music depends very much on the room. What carries well in one space may not work in another. Klein takes time to let the sound unfold and to let listeners tune in. He and the audience share the same environment and, through playing and listening, become co-creators of the sonic experience.
Tobias Klein is a saxophonist, bass clarinettist and composer based in Amsterdam. He is artistic director of Spinifex and the Archimboldi Ensemble, co-leads the quartet Dalgoo, and plays in duos with Oguz Büyükberber and Lothar Ohlmeier. His recent solo piece Ludensic, written for Fie Schouten, appears on her new album, out in December on NoBusiness Records.
